Prime minister Sheikh Hasina on Sunday claimed the hands of Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) and its ally Jamaat-e-Islami are behind the killing of the two foreigners.

The prime minister was addressing a media conference at her official residence Ganabhaban in the city, briefing newsmen about the outcome of her just-concluded US visit.

Sheikh Hasina paid an eight-day official visit to the US from 24 September to 1 October to attend the 70th session of the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA).

“Yes, two foreigners were killed and the style of the killing is almost similar which suggests that the killing was pre-planned,” prime minister Sheikh Hasina replied when Samakal editor Golam Sarowar asked who were behind the foreigners’ killing.

While asking the question, Golam Sarowar mentioned that the killing took place at a time when “two razakars [Pakistani collaborators in 1971]” are about to walk gallows and the Islamic State group reportedly claimed responsibility for the killing.

Also the president of ruling Awami League, Sheikh Hasina recalled the statements of a BNP leader “given just before and after the killing.”

She said things would be clear if the two statements vis-a-vis the killing of Japanese national in Rangpur are compared.

The prime minister also criticised the western countries for issuing travel alerts while visiting Bangladesh as well as for postponing Cricket Australia’s tour of Bangladesh.

“Two men were gunned down just in front of police headquarters in Australia shortly after the country postponed its cricket test tour of Bangladesh while ten students were killed in a shooting in an US school. The question is whether any country has issued travel alerts while visiting those two countries,” she added.

The prime minister was also critical of being so sensitive about the incidents of killing. “We become sensitive in every case but you must not forget that Bangladesh is a much smaller country compared to the US. Even so, we maintain law and order and ensure food security for the huge population here.”

Terming the foreigners’ killing a planned one, the prime minister said, “We are taking necessary action. There must be a plan behind this, just when war criminals who reigned for as much as 21 years since 1975 in the country, are being tried. You must not forget that they were in the state power.

There is bound to be a reaction to their trial.”

Sheikh Hasina said people were being killed and women are being raped every day in the US. “If we compare the number of incidents taking place in Bangladesh with that in the US, there is nothing to be so anxious about. We are taking action. Even our own party men are being tried.”

The AL president said the goal of “BNP-Jamaat razakars will be successful if you think that the two incidents have destroyed all of our achievements.”

She said, “Indubitably their patronization is behind these incidents and the goal is to question our achievements. The countrymen must understand this. The people must know that there is certainly an aim behind these incidents. For sure, their hands are behind these incidents and there is no doubt about it.”

The prime minister said, “Our intelligence is looking into the killing of the two foreigners and you will see that the perpetrators will be detained and thus tried.”

In a time span of barely a week, two foreign nationals were gunned down in the country, triggering global outrage.

The murders of two foreign nationals were planned and similar in style, Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina told the press today.
The premier made the comment while addressing a press conference at Gono Bhaban after returning from her trip to the UN assembly in New York.
“Such types of incidents are being carried out aiming at making our achievements questionable,” she said while briefing media. “Our intelligence wings are investigating into the matter. You see, they (killers) will be brought to book and to be tried too.”
Responding to a question, the Awami League president said, “If you mean all of our achievements have gone in vain following the two killings, then I will say BNP, Jamaat and Razakars have become successful in smearing the image of the country. They have provocation behind the incidents.”
Bangladesh had a significant role in identifying the Sustainable Development Goals (SDG) adopted in the 70th general assembly of the United Nations, the premier said.
She also upheld world leaders’ views on Bangladesh and said that no one raised a question regarding the validity of the incumbent Awami League government.
“On the contrary, they praised Bangladesh for its swift progress in economic status,” she said.
Responding to another question over the shooting of a minor boy by ruling lawmaker Manzurul Islam Liton in Gaibandha, Hasina said his firearms licenses have been cancelled and he has been sued as a part of steps against him.
Replying to a question over the visit of Bangladeshi women cricket team to Pakistan, PM said, “Why will they not go Pakistan? We still have state-level relationship. Our girls went to Pakistan as they are brave. They should be congratulated for this.”
She called upon the newspaper and television owner to give festival bonus on the occasion of Pahela Baishakh.
Warning stern action against militancy, the Awami League president said, “We will continue our drive against militancy. Militants have no religion or state. Militancy is their religion.”
